The Beefsteak Raid Steak Dinner and Auction is on Wednesday, Sept. 16. Buy your tickets now at the Prince George County Regional Heritage Center, 6406 Courthouse Road (10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday - Friday) OR at pgcrhc.org.

In September 1864, Confederate cavalry under Major General Wade Hampton slipped behind Union lines at Coggins Point, right here in Prince George County, and rode off with nearly 2,500 head of cattle intended for General Grant's army. The "Beefsteak Raid" became one of the most famous cattle rustles in American history, and it happened in our own backyard.

Each September, the Heritage Center and our partner Ruritan Clubs commemorate the raid the best way we know how: with a good steak dinner shared among neighbors.
